Artist Statement

As an I artist I experience the world through my eyes and hands and heart. I am inspired by the grace of the natural world and the beauty of life’s divine essence. Each drawing or painting of a plant or animal becomes a character study: a story emerges from the way an animal moves, or a vine curls. I am especially drawn to the dieties of Hindu and Buddhist art in which every gesture is meaningful and every object rich in symbolism.

I grew up being taught to ask questions, to explore and marvel at the world around me. God was everywhere and nowhere. In my art I find solace, and in that solace I find deeper insight and new understanding. Art is an expression of my inner journey. From “who are we and why are we here?”, to an intimate look at the myriad of experiences that interweave to create this tapestry of life. My art is created in the celebration of the miracle of being alive. Art is my church. My work is a tangible expression of prayer; my conversations with God, or Goddess as the case may be.

Sarafin Illuminations is a moniker of deep significance to me. "Sarafin" is a word of my own creation, a combination of Sarah, meaning "princess," and seraphim defined as an order of angels or "fiery ones."

"Illumination" carries many meanings. In my work it manifests as the act of decoration, a source of light, and spiritual enlightenment. I am enlightened by the inspiration and creation of my art and it is my desire to share this light with others.
